Jack Van Dorp Racing.com – Ontario Racing

Dec13

We had 3 objectives for this “race”:
- Get experience with activity of this intensity / duration
- Promote physical activity
- Raise funds to race in New Zealand.

First of all, a huge thank you to the volunteers: Carrie, Andrew, Jill, and Luke, for keeping me fed and watered, talking to people, and getting the word out there on Facebook, YouTube, and the website. Thank you Sportmakers for the bikes and rowing machines, Sears for the treadmill, and Heritage Place for the space.

Thank you to the friends (and passerby) who rowed and rode beside me to keep me going (especially on those long stages towards the end of the day).

Thank you to the sponsors who generously provided gift certificates that we could give to donors, and to the donors who gave so generously.

I consider this event a success on all three levels.

Event Statistics:
Distance covered: 150 miles (covered by Jack: 141 miles, with 9 miles taken off the rowing stage)
Funds raised: over $1000

NUTRITION:
Calories burned (estimated from equipment)
Run 1: 300
Bike 1: 1800
Run 2: 2800
Bike 2: 500
Row: 2600
Bike 3: 1800
Total: 9800

Calories taken in:
4 eggs + bread + granola breakfast (est 1000 calories)
Bananas (5): (650 calories)
Bottles of Boost: 3 (720 calories)
Brie CHeese (320 calories)
Flat Coke (final hour): (200 calories)
Grapes (20): (50 calories)
Gatorade: (520 calories)
2 powerbars (440 calories)
Perpetuem: (400 calories)
Total: ~ 4300 calories.
Plus some handfuls of cereal etcetera, a ‘boost’ right after, and a hearty chicken and wild rice dinner at home.

Volume of Water / Gatorade / Perpetuem consumed: 10+L
Suceed Electrolyte capsules: 16
Calcium tabs: ?? (invaluable – every time I felt any churning in my stomach)
Ibuprofen: 6

Bathroom breaks: 1 (after 10 hours)

I might have missed a calorie source or two, but the bottom line is that food intake leading up to the event is key, and everything I take in during an event like this needs to be calorie-dense. Liquid calories were best. My stomach felt good throughout, a little bit full at 10 hours (hence the bathroom break).

NZ will be easier in some ways:
-better scenery :)
-easier to focus on the race, without people to talk to

and more difficult in others:
-higher intensity
-no one to hand-feed while out on the course
-have to anticipate and carry nutrition on each stage

But I think we are better prepared overall for having done this event.

It was awesome to see you going at in the mall. Gave me a respect for what shape you have to be in to even think of competing. Good luck!
